ALPHARETTA, Ga., May 3, 2019 – Students from Piney Grove Middle School gathered at the headquarters of Christmas Lights, Etc to pack cookies for U.S. troops as part of the school’s annual Grizzly Great Day of Giving (G3) community outreach event. To date, PGMS students have packed more than 35,000 cookies for U.S. soldiers overseas.

Teaming up with PGMS and Christmas Lights, Etc was Treat the Troops, a nonprofit dedicated to packing and shipping cookies, treats, cards and letters to U.S. troops stationed outside the country. The Georgia chapter, (the “Southern Style” chapter), headquartered in Cumming, Ga., is the third largest chapter in the United States. Since its founding in 2012, it has packed and shipped more than 1 million cookies to the troops.

“It’s so wonderful what the school is doing, getting so many students involved with non-profits like ours to improve their communities,” said Linda Jones of Treat the Troops. “I can tell you, our soldiers appreciate it. They tell me all the time how much the cards and homemade cookies mean to them. They can smell home when they open those boxes. We want those guys and gals to know they aren’t forgotten.”

She encouraged local residents to contact Treat the Troops if they have friends or relatives overseas they would like a care package sent to.

This year the students got an added treat for their volunteerism: a chance to view the showroom at Christmas Lights, Etc’s 100,000 square foot headquarters. The showroom displays thousands of colorful Christmas lights, giant Christmas trees and lighted decor for the holidays and year-round.

“We are delighted to host these students and volunteers in our facility for the wonderful work they are doing,” said Chris Miller, Co-Owner of Christmas Lights, Etc. “Giving students the opportunity to experience the difference they can make in their communities and the lives of others is a valuable lesson. We are proud to be a sponsor of Piney Grove’s Great Day of Giving.”

Miller said Christmas Lights, Etc plans to continue its support of G3 and encourages other local businesses to do the same, both with G3 and Treat the Troops.
