MILTON, Ga. — A Milton man is out more than $28,000 after he received fraudulent checks as payment for an equipment transaction.

The victim said he had posted an advertisement on Craigslist to sell robotics equipment from a business venture. The seller was contacted by an interested buyer who identified himself as Conrad, and the two men met on May 10.

Conrad said he wanted to make the purchase and told the victim he would mail a check with a partial payment and that his business partner would mail a check for the remaining amount at a later time.

The man received a cashier’s check on May 14 for $10,950 which cleared his bank. He received another check the next day for $17,250.

Conrad and another unidentified man picked up the equipment on May 17. The victim said he did not believe the transaction was a fraud because the first check cleared his bank. However, the man received a call later notifying him the first check was fraudulent, and his bank would be removing the funds from his account. The man contacted his other bank and was informed the second check was also fake.
