The Atlanta Wind Symphony and the Milton High School Wind Ensemble were honored to be chosen as featured performers at the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) 2020 Conference to be held in Athens, GA.  Atlanta-area audiences have an opportunity to hear both groups perform the music they prepared for the GMEA conference at a free concert on Sunday, January 19, at 3:00 p.m. in the Lassiter High School Concert Hall (2601 Shallowford Rd, Marietta, GA 30066). 

The Atlanta Wind Symphony, under the direction of David Kehler, will perform Esprit de Corps (Robert Jager); Symphony For Band (Vincent Persichetti); Four Scottish Dances (Malcolm Arnold); Washington Post (John Philip Sousa); and two contemporary compositions, Avelynn’s Lullaby (Joel Puckett), conducted by AWS Associate Conductor Chris Shumick, and Notezart (Cindy McTee), conducted by AWS Associate Conductor Tyler Ehrlich. 

The Milton High School Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Chris Shumick, will perform the newly commissioned Fanfare for Athena (Tyler S. Grant); Fantasia in G (Bach, trans Goldman/Liest), conducted by David Vandwalker, Coordinator of Performing Arts for Fulton County Schools; O Rose of May (Harrison Collins); Morning Song (Philip Sparke), Dragon Rhyme, mvt. II (Chen Yi), conducted by Kevin Kenney, Assistant Director of Bands at Milton High School; and Kingfishers Catch Fire (John Mackey).

The 2019-2020 season marks the Atlanta Wind Symphony's 40th anniversary as an all-volunteer community wind ensemble dedicated to delivering inspiring performances of quality wind band literature. Comprised of more than 60 adult musicians ranging in experience from music educators to hobbyists, the group has performed at Carnegie Hall and has received the John Philip Sousa Foundation's Sudler Silver Scroll, North America's most prestigious award for community concert bands. 

Since its founding in 1949, the band program at Milton High School has been an integral part of the school and community and has a decades-long history of excellence, with a current enrollment of over 200 musicians.
