JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The Johns Creek City Council unanimously passed an amendment Jan. 21 to the alcohol serving ordinance to allow wine shops and malt spirits shops to allow the tasting of their respective beverages. The amendment is effective immediately.

Customers are restricted to two hours of participation at the tastings, but the businesses may conduct the tastings themselves for a longer period. The tastings are limited to those establishments with 90 percent of sales of wine or malted beverages.

Tastings are limited to four samples of no more than 2 ounces each. The purpose of the tastings is to give customers a sampling of a wider variety of wines, beers and ales. The judgment of the council was that it would help the businesses educate their customers and introduce them to varieties that they might not otherwise discover.

In other council business:

• The council is considering a new ordinance to allow fines for false alarms. In 2012, Johns Creek police responded to 5,184 false alarms. That is an average of more than 14 calls a day. The fire department received 706 calls last year. At a cost of $480 per fire response, that is a cost of $84,000 to that department alone. The ordinance contemplated will require the registration of fire alarms and graduated fines for false alarms from the same system.

• Newtown Park’s playground will get a new makeover after the council unanimously approved a bid of $149,216 from Komcan Inc. for new playground equipment and other renovations. The purchase will be made through U.S. Communities, a nonprofit cooperative of city governments that reduce costs through their combined purchasing power nationwide.

• The public hearing for building variance in the Park at Haynes Manor community has been deferred until Feb. 25 at the applicant’s request. The applicant is seeking a variance to revise the site plan to build six detached single-family homes instead of eight attached townhomes as called for.
