For the first time in over a decade, the FDA has just recently approved a new long term weight loss drug called Belviq, from Arena Pharmaceuticals. As I read the article, I was angry and saddened to read about another weight loss pill, that initially was not approved by the FDA, that has now been approved, as doctors continue to push for anti-obesity drugs, that, according to studies, are not very effective, as well as offer many negative and harmful side effects.
With obesity rates in the U.S. rising to 35% of the adult population, much less the alarming increase in childhood obesity, it’s way past time to stop playing around with a very serious health and life issue that is essentially out of control.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the medical community, and drug companies used the money that funds research, and fills corporate and private pockets, to instead create wellness communities, centers and facilities that offer educational and inspirational programs based in compassion, understanding and positive support that is foundational to successful and sustainable lifestyle changes that would transform our society, one person at a time.
Having struggled with weight and obesity issues for 43 years, I know how hard it is to break unhealthy eating habits, toxic attitudes and behaviors and negative thinking, which, in my opinion, all play a significant and critical role in creating positive, sustainable lifestyle changes.
It’s not an easy thing, to be sure. But one thing that I have learned, for sure, is that ultimately I am the one who is choosing my thoughts and subsequent behaviors. Regardless of family health history, upbringing, environment, etc, I know that there is hope for each person that is struggling with, even suffering with obesity, and unhealthy weight and life issues. It’s different for every person. No two people are alike, yet often those differences are overlooked, when it comes to a successful approach in creating a healthy, happy and fulfilling life.
Maybe you’re struggling with obesity. Maybe you have a few pounds you’d like to release. Maybe you’re comfortable with your body’s weight, and don’t really think much about it. Wherever you are along the spectrum, every individual choice you make has a ripple effect on the “whole.” Make a difference, not just in your own life, but in everyone’s life.
Pay attention to your choices. Life is like a game, and how you play it changes everything. Everyone is a winner when we each make choices that support health and well being for all people. Choose wisely, lovingly, and compassionately. If you’re ready to change the rules of “the weighting game,” now is the perfect time to start. Game On! It’s your move!!
