ALPHARETTA, Ga. – A 17-year-old boy is in the hospital with serious injuries Dec. 21 after running his car into a monument sign on Mid Broadwell Road, igniting his car.
Police say the driver was the only occupant in a black Mercedes sedan and driving eastbound on Mid Broadwell from downtown Crabapple at 3 a.m. He failed to navigate the curve of the road and ran into the brick sign of the Briarfield neighborhood. His car caught fire.
When police arrived, they doused the driver with a fire extinguisher to keep flames off him until emergency crews could get him out, said Georgie Gordon, Alpharetta Public Safety spokesman.
“It was bad,” Gordon said.
An investigation is ongoing to determine what caused the crash, however police suspect high speeds was a contributing factor.
