CUMMING, Ga. — South Forsyth High School’s culinary competition team once again proved they have a knack for the kitchen.
On March 17, the team headed to Athens and beat out 15 other culinary teams from across the state at the Georgia Family, Career and Community Leaders of America state competition to win the top prize of gold medal at the state culinary competition.
This is the second gold medal and first place victory for the SFHS culinary team coached by Dawn Martin, culinary arts instructor at SFHS. Team members are Nicolette Kirkpatrick, Brittany Meier and Corey Nolan.
The competition took 16 culinary teams from across the state and gave them one hour to prepare a Chicken Alfredo entree with a Balsamic Vinaigrette garden salad while being observed by judges.
“The SFHS team was praised for its taste, timely presentation, communication skills and safety and sanitation,” Martin said.
The gold medal honor was accompanied with $36,000 of scholarship prize money to the Culinary Institute of America and the School of Culinary, Baking and Pastry Arts at Johnson and Wales University-Charlotte.
The culinary team competes next at the National FCCLA Culinary Competition against other winning culinary teams from high schools across the country, Puerto Rico and Guam. The national championship will be held July 7-11 in Nashville, Tenn.
