Seven local North Fulton students awarded Sawnee EMC scholarships

CUMMING, Ga. — The Sawnee Electric Membership Foundation recently awarded seven local high school seniors each with a $3,500 scholarship. The scholarship recipients were honored at a reception held at Sawnee EMC on April 23.

Each year, scholarship applications are made available to high schools within Sawnee EMC’s service area that would educate children of Sawnee EMC members. The applications are also available online for those members that homeschool their children. Retired educators score the applications and conduct personal interviews with the finalists.

In the past eight years, the SEMC Foundation has awarded $259,000 in scholarships to 78 high school seniors within Sawnee EMC’s seven-county service area.

Among the 12 recipients for 2013, are the following seven students from Forsyth County and North Fulton: Nick Fischer of Forsyth Central High School, Martin Garcia of Forsyth Central, Bailey Howard of Forsyth Central, Rachel Mooney of North Forsyth High, Adam Harrison-Trent of West Forsyth High, Scott Berson of Northview High and Megan Noone of Chattahoochee High School.

“It is such a privilege for the foundation to be able to assist these students in furthering their education,” said Blake House, vice president of member services at Sawnee EMC. “The Foundation Youth Scholarship program is a shining example of what the foundation and Sawnee EMC are all about; a commitment to giving back in the communities we serve.”

The funding for the scholarship program is derived from abandoned patronage capital funds from Sawnee EMC, which is separate and apart from the funds that the foundation distributes to charitable organizations and the funds used to support education activities in local schools throughout the year.

The SEMC Foundation has made donations to local charities and local schools totaling $1,389,823 since its inception in 2003, predominately through its “Operation Round Up” program where SEMC members “voluntarily” roundup their monthly energy bill to the next highest dollar.

“Supporting those in need in our communities, and helping these outstanding students continue their education is a key part of meeting the foundation’s core mission,” said Foundation Board Chairman Jerry Burum.
