ROSWELL, Ga. – Ten fifth-graders from Northwood Elementary School in Roswell won Fulton County’s third annual Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl competition on Saturday, Jan. 12.

Ison Springs hosted 11 elementary schools for the competition. Teams of students read and studied 16 books nominated for the Georgia Children’s Book Award for 2013. They competed in a round robin format for six rounds, answering 10 questions each round.

Northwood came out on top with 340 points. Northwood’s team of students began reading last May. Over the summer, they read some of the books on school e-readers. At school, they practiced each week during their lunchtimes, being quizzed on details from each of the books. The team now moves on to the Helen Ruffin Regional Bowl at Clayton State College Feb. 2.
