Dutch Monkey Doughnuts a sweet business success



CUMMING, Ga. — Dutch Monkey Doughnuts have gotten a lot of attention since their Big Break win. So much attention that they have sold out of their gourmet doughnuts every single day.

“We have never had exposure of this magnitude,” said Martin Burge, co-owner. “It feels like a big deal; it’s been absolutely crazy.”

Dutch Monkey Doughnuts, an independently owned shop at 3075 Ronald Reagan Boulevard, garnered about 58,000 votes to be one of five winners in the American Express Open’s “Big Break for Small Business” contest.

They won $25,000, which Arpana Satyu, co-owner, said will ramp-up production in their business.

Satyu said three positions were created because of all the exposure they have been getting.

“We are super excited,” Satyu said.

On Oct. 1, they participated in marketing and strategy sessions with American Express Open and Facebook experts. They also took pictures with their $25,000 giant check and shot a commercial.

Part of their strategy session will be to drive even more customers to their door.

Katie Washington, director of social media at American Express, said 38 percent of entrepreneurs are using some sort of social media platform to promote their business.

The goal of the sessions with Satyu and Burge is to make them even better at what they are currently doing really well.

“We want to translate online interactions into real transactions,” Washington said. “It’s changing the way we interact, and this will help them have a voice for their business.”
