Milton player invited to All-American Bowl

MILTON, Ga. — Cory Helms, a 2012 Eagles football team center at Milton High School who has verbally committed to Wake Forest University, was recognized at the USA Today Sports event at the Peachtree Westin in Atlanta Dec. 20.

The event was to recognize some of the top athletes in Georgia.

Helms was presented with a plaque and a jacket.

Helms was also asked to play at the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl game held in Houston, Texas on Dec. 31.

This game was bittersweet.

Helms was to attend the All-American game with his friend, mentor and coach, Mike Scott.

Coach Scott passed away Dec. 3 after battling pancreatic cancer.

Helms and the Eagles offensive line were pall bearers at Scott’s funeral last month.

Helms said he really loved his coach and wanted him to be there for the game.

“It’s been a tough year for the Milton players,” said Sharon Helms, his mother. “I have seen the hard work and dedication all the boys have given to the team this season in particular.”
