MILTON, Ga. — Every two minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted, statistics show.

That’s about 207,754 victims of sexual assault each year, according RAINN (Rape Abuse and Incest National Network).

Worst of all, 54 percent of sexual assaults are not reported to police.

Would you know what to do in case you were approached by an attacker?

The Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) class offered by the Milton Police Department teaches women, aged 13 and up, how to defend themselves if attacked.

Students can expect discussions on existing dangers and self-defense techniques suitable for women of all ages and abilities. The class is designed to give practical responses to women during various levels of confrontation, from passive verbal comments to severe aggressive acts.

“This is a very aggressive class, taught by men,” said Community Outreach Officer Ara Baronian, certified R.A.D. instructor. “The attendees have to be comfortable with being grabbed and thrown down.”

The class is 15 hours broken down into three five-hour sessions and costs $40. Interest in the program is high, Baronian said.

“I recently held an informational session at Anytime Fitness and it went really well,” Baronian said. “Since then, we’ve had close to 200 people interested in attending a class.”

Baronian said they are currently securing venues large enough to hold the classes.

Class dates will be posted on the city of Milton website at www.cityofmilton.us.
