Local mentors’ breakfast awards ceremony Oct. 30

Mentors ‘can make a difference in the life of a child’

CUMMING, Ga. — Mentors will be honored at the 2012 Magic Moments Breakfast, sponsored by Mentor Me North Georgia.

The breakfast will be held at 7:30 am, Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the Lanier Technical College Forsyth Conference Center, 7745 Majors Road in Cumming.

“Mentor Me provides a vital service to our community,” said Virgilio Perez Pascoe, board chairman and a mentor. “Our mentors do fun things with their mentees, like going to movies, parks and sporting events. But, most important, they are friends who can develop healthy relationships with the children.”

Mentor Me is a nonprofit organization that provides one-on-one mentoring relationships between volunteer adults and children.

The program will highlight how important mentors are for children at risk.

“Mentors play a key role in helping so many children stay on the right track and become successful adults,” Pascoe said. “We encourage everyone who would like to help children to join us at the breakfast.

“We can make a difference in the life of a child,” he said.

Most of the children who are mentored come from single parent homes, or are living with grandparents or foster parents.

They may be referred by a school social worker or parents and guardians who just want to provide children with mentors who can be role models and friends.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Forsyth is the corporate sponsor for this year’s breakfast.

Tickets are $15.
