Johns Creek father accused of beating 5 week old baby

Injuries inflicted after argument with mother escalates

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – A Johns Creek man is facing charges Jan. 12 of brutally assaulting his 5-week-old baby girl leaving the child with severe injuries and in critical condition.

The incident began when Gregory Odell Barnett, 37, of Johns Creek was arguing with his live-in girlfriend.

During the argument, the girlfriend said she would take their baby and leave for the night. At that point, she alleges Barnett became violent toward her. He forced her out of the home without the baby.

According to the police report, the girlfriend said she left the home and when she returned 20 minutes later found the baby beaten, swollen and crying, lying face down on a pillow outside of her crib.

“The baby’s rear, left and right side of her head looked deformed due to the massive amount of swelling,” a reporting police officer said in his report.

Both parents took the child to Emory Johns Creek Hospital, where a nurse called police.

The baby was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite for treatment. Doctors said the baby suffered a broken clavicle and several skull fractures.

Barnett denied harming the child. He was arrested and is being held in Fulton County Jail without bail on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery and first degree cruelty to a child.

Police say the child is still in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing.
