JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Traffic was halted Monday at the intersection of Old Alabama Road and Haynes Bridge Road after a construction crew accidentally drilled into a high-pressure, 6-inch gas main.

A light brown gas was visible and audible as it escaped from the gas main.

Workers digging outside the Chartwell subdivision at the intersection of Old Alabama Road and Haynes Bridge Road struck a gas main around 1:30 p.m. June 23, closing traffic westbound on Old Alabama Road.

Johns Creek Fire Department did not allow traffic into Chartwell until Atlanta Gas Light repair trucks arrived to fix the gas main.

Johns Creek Station No. 63, just 30 yards from the scene, was quick to respond, rerouting traffic and securing the accident scene.

The city advised motorists to find alternate routes. Park Place and the Johns Creek Community Center at Newtown Park were closed.
