Fulton invites seniors to strategy meeting

Discuss growing needs of seniors

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. – The Fulton County Housing and Human Services Department, Office of Aging wants seniors and their caregivers to participate in focus groups designed to plan strategies for meeting the growing needs of seniors.

The focus group meetings are designed to plan strategies to help seniors to age-in-place and maintain their independence.

Caregivers of more fragile seniors are also urged to participate in the conversations about program and service needs.

The Office of Aging will host four “Join the Conversation” meetings. The North Fulton meeting will be Friday, Nov. 2, at the Dorothy C. Benson Senior Multipurpose Complex at the following times:

** 10 a.m. – noon, and 2 – 4 p.m.

The planned focus groups are the direct result of the findings of the State of Senior Survey conducted in April and May 2012. The survey identified transportation as the most frequently reported need. Ninety percent of individuals 55 and under reported that their relative(s) relied on other people for transportation.

Additionally, 65 percent of responders rated the need for transportation at the highest level of priority for improving the quality of life of seniors.

The most frequently cited transportation needs involved medical appointments and grocery shopping.

Key findings also identified the need for assistance with routine housework, grocery shopping and walking. Other concerns cited by seniors involved health, accessibility to services and crime. Additionally, financial difficulties often resulted in the need for employment and re-entry into the workforce.

Recommendations to support daily activities included more of a focus on home care and community support services to enable seniors to age-in-place and continue to live healthy, independent lives.

Seniors can sign up to “Join the Conversation” at the senior multipurpose facilities to help the Office of Aging to plan collaborative strategies for meeting the needs of seniors or get more information by calling the Fulton County STARLine at 404-613-6000.
