MILTON, Ga. – Milton held its annual Memorial Day ceremony May 27 at City Hall.

With a theme of “Freedom isn’t free,” the event drew a large crowd for keynote speaker Col. Michael Steele, who was in the battle that became the basis of the film “Black Hawk Down.”

Steele was company commander in the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment during Operation Gothic Serpent’s First Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia, the events of which were recounted in the famous book and film.

After more than 15 hours of fighting, armed vehicles arrived to take away the injured, and the Rangers provided security around the convoy, fighting their way to Pakistani Stadium.

Steele was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor Device for his actions as commander in the fight.

It is an annual tradition in Milton to list the names of the fallen soldiers with relatives living within the city.
