Forsyth County woman’s computer held for ransom

CUMMING, Ga. — A scammer hacked a woman’s computer and gave it a virus, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s incident report.

At 11 a.m. Feb. 2, a woman in the 1700 block of Lazy River Lane told deputies she was using her computer when a screen popped up saying the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation had locked her computer because inappropriate content was viewed. The pop-up screen also said it would cost $200 to have the computer unlocked.

The deputy advised the victim not to use the computer until an investigator was able to view it.

According to, this type of virus called “ransomware” can install itself if a user clicks on a compromised site. The virus then locks up the computer and charges a fee to unlock it.
