FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A 61-year-old man was struck by a van when he tried to cross the road, Saturday, Dec. 21.

Johnie Baker, 61, was pronounced dead on the scene. Baker was struck by a van on Canton Highway Ga.20 near the Cherokee County line, according to Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Phil Alexander.

Baker walked out in front of a full size Ford E-250 van driven by Victor Martinez, of Jasper.

Martinez stopped to render aid.

Deputy Doug Rainwater, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said Baker was walking from his home off Canton Highway and he attempted to cross the road when he was struck.

Neither the driver nor the pedestrian showed evidence of alcohol or drug impairment, Rainwater said.

The crash is under investigation by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and no charges have been filed.
