Former NFL player leads charity football camp

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – National Football League cornerback Ellis Hobbs was No. 31 for the Philadelphia Eagles, but he is No. 1 in the hearts of Barnwell Elementary School. Hobbs has organized a football skills camp that will raise money for the outdoor play areas at Barnwell in Johns Creek.

Hobbs visited the school for its fall festival a few months ago and said he was dismayed by the shape of the school’s field and playgrounds.

He drafted five other current or retired NFL players to help him.

The camp is open to young players from across metro Atlanta. The camp for elementary students runs from 9 a.m. to noon. The camp for middle and high school students runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Hobbs played for six seasons in the National Football League. He played college football for Iowa State.

He was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft and played for them from 2005 to 2008. He was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in April 2009 and played for them from 2009 to 2010 before a neck injury ended his career.

Hobbs is the former record holder for the longest kickoff return (108 yards).

Registration includes a T-shirt and a chance to get an item autographed by all six coaches.
