Donation makes Hearthstone pool ramp possible

FORSYTH COUNTY - Even more people will now be able to use the pool at Forsyth County’s Hearthstone Lodge Community Center, thanks to a generous donation that provided funding for a new pool ramp to be installed. The new ramp will allow for increased accessibility to the pool for those with limited mobility. The ramp was donated to the county through AgeWell Forsyth by the family of Alice Mashburn. The ramp was dedicated in Ms. Mashburn’s honor on Dec. 29, her 92nd birthday. County officials and staff joined Mashburn’s family and friends in wishing her a happy birthday, and also expressed their appreciation for the donation. “This facility is such a great amenity for our county’s active adults, and this new pool ramp is a wonderful addition,” Commission Chairman Charles Laughinghouse said. District 5 Commissioner Jim Boff echoed the chairman’s remarks, noting the ramp “is a wonderful, thoughtful addition for everyone involved.” During the dedication event, family members of  Mashburn touted the benefits she has reaped from using the facility’s pool, and also encouraged others to participate in aquatic exercise activities. The Hearthstone Lodge Community Center serves active adults age 50 plus and includes a fitness room and an aquatic center with an indoor heated pool. The center offers a variety of aquatic classes for varying skill levels, as well as open swim times. “Water fitness activities are good for those who haven’t exercised in a while, those who are undergoing rehabilitation and, of course, senior citizens,” Senior Services Director Shelley Johnson said. “We are really proud to offer different classes here at the Hearthstone Lodge that accommodate swimmers from beginner to advanced.” The Hearthstone Lodge Community Center is located at 7305 Lanier Drive.
