CUMMING, Ga. — Christine M. Roberts is on a mission to motivate.
For years, the Cumming-based author has been working with local high school students and business executives to inspire them, but wants her newly self-published book, “Inspirational Mind Food,” to be a platform that can help her reach a larger audience.
“These are small little stories of tensions I’ve had,” Roberts said. “When you are in a situation, instead of going down the automatic mode, try to snap out of it for a minute and look at it differently.”
The first of the stories she shares tells of a drive on Ga. 400 northbound and a tailgater getting the best of her.
“My first thought was ‘What is this person’s problem?’” she writes. “I found myself getting really ticked; it seemed like a deliberate case of harassment...as traffic broke up, the car sped by me, got over to the right and off the ramp at the hospital exit.
“I immediately felt embarrassed…Why did I think it was about me? That person doesn’t even know me and I was getting ticked off as if it was a personal offense.”
As an action, later on, Roberts recommends, “Stop worrying about what other people are thinking or doing and focus on being the best you can be.”
Roberts believes that a person who wants to be healthy will feed their body healthy foods, so why not feed the mind with positive messages.
“If somebody shows up at your house with dirty diapers, leftover food and starts taking it out and just putting it into your house, you’d tell them to take their garbage out of your house,” Roberts said. “But every day we are being downloaded with garbage and we don’t even know it, and it ultimately affects how we feel and how we act.”
Roberts is married and a mother to a 7-year-old and a 9-year-old. She’s also a certified child advocate. She has been a Mentor Me program participant for the last two years and “Mentor of the Year 2012.” She’s an executive MBA Georgia State University graduate who writes regular columns in My Forsyth magazine.
Her early life included an alcoholic father and severe poverty, but she said the first step to changing her life was breaking the cycle of negativity.
“I said to myself, ‘This is not going to be my life,’” she said. “There’s so much coming at us that is negative, but there’s something to be said about the law of attraction.
“I’ve seen in my life so many miraculous things happen,” Roberts said. “And it was all about having a paradigm shift.”
