FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Stephon Tyrique Alston loved sports. You name it — football, baseball, golf and karate, he was up for it.
The 7-year-old enjoyed his video games and loved his dog — Snickers.
On July 29, while at a pool in an apartment complex in Cumming, Stephon accidentally drowned.
Born Sept. 8, 2004 in Lawrenceville, the Sugar Hill Elementary School second-grader was excellent at reading and math, his father, Stephen Alston told the Forsyth Herald.
Between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., Stephon, of Sugar Hill, had been playing at the pool at 3100 Preston Pointe Way, in the Centennial Apartments in the Windermere subdivision off of Ga. 20 East, according to Forsyth County Sheriff’s investigators.
Stephon’s father, Stephen, of Cumming, had left the pool area to go to the restroom to wipe off his face after he had been pushed into the pool.
When the father came back, he saw his son’s swimsuit at the bottom of the pool and then realized that his son was not resurfacing. He jumped into the pool and pulled his son out and began to try and revive him.
“It was devastating,” Stephen recalled.
The two had planned to spend the day together, and Stephon had been playing in the shallow end of the pool between three-to-five foot deep water when his father left for the restroom.
Other swimmers at the pool and people sunbathing did not notice what was happening.
Nearby residents came to assist Stephen once he pulled his son’s lifeless body from the pool and started CPR.
Two deputies arrived on the scene and took over until emergency responders arrived.
Stephon was then transported to Northside Hospital-Forsyth, where he was later pronounced dead.
Deputies said the child was pulled from an area of the pool that was three to five feet deep.
The drowning remains under investigation by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Special Victim’s Unit.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 2 at the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home in Buford.
In addition to his father, Stephon is survived by his mother, Erica Harrison, and sister, Enricka Shante Alston, 22, both of Sugar Hill.
