Roswell, Ga. — Centennial High School Principal Steven Miletto stepped down from his post just days before the end of the first semester in December, attributing his resignation to personal issues.
“Over the last several months, I have been dealing with some personal challenges that need to receive my full attention,” Miletto said in a letter prior to his last day on Dec. 19. “I have determined that the only way to do this is to step down from my position as principal.”
Miletto, the 2009 Principal of the Year for Georgia and a top three finalist for the national award, has been Centennial’s principal since May 2010. He was the school’s fourth principal since it opened in 1997.
Prior to coming to Centennial, Miletto was a principal at Osborne High School in Cobb County for seven years, and had also worked in Walton, DeKalb and Rockdale counties.
In 2011, Miletto was appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal to serve on his Education Advisory Board. A spokesman for the governor confirmed Miletto is still a member of the board.
While a search for a permanent principal is underway, the position will be filled by Kibbey Crumbley on an interim basis. Crumbley was an assistant principal at Northview High School for eight years until her transfer last summer to serve as an executive aide to Superintendent Robert Avossa.
The resignation of Miletto comes at a pivotal time for Centennial High School as it moves toward charter school status. The school is one of only 20 schools selected to elect and train a governance board this year to serve as the decision-making body for the school.
While only schools with veteran principals were authorized to participate in the first phase, school officials say Miletto’s resignation should have no impact on Centennial’s plans to become a charter school. The election for governance board members has been conducted and the school’s assistant principal attended all training and meetings.
“It is my intent to continue with their Cohort 1 status,” said Will Rumbaugh, an area superintendent for Fulton Schools.
The hiring process for a new principal will follow district policy, which includes focus groups of parents, staff and community members and a Principal Interview Committee comprised of community members and staff. The final recommendation will be made to the Fulton School Board based upon the results of the selection process and the judgment of the superintendent. The recommendation is expected to occur in the spring.
“Depending on who the candidate is, a timeline for beginning as principal will be set accordingly,” explained Rumbaugh. “If the candidate is an assistant principal, for instance, he/she could begin fairly soon after the introduction; if, however, he/she is a sitting principal, the timeline for beginning the position could be longer.”
