MILTON, Ga. – Region championships for sophomore J.R. Salemi (113 pounds), freshman Brandon Filosi (138 pounds) and senior Malik McNeil (285 pounds) were among the highlights Feb. 1 as the Cambridge Bears finished third in this year’s Region 7-AAAAA traditional wrestling tournament.

The top four wrestlers from each of the Division AAAAA regions move on to sectionals. From there, the top eight wrestlers from both the East and West sectionals will continue their journey to Macon Feb. 14, to compete for the GHSA state championship.

Cambridge was well represented with four more Bears working their way through the consolation brackets in hopes of finishing up in the top four. All four were victorious. They will join Salemi, Filosi and McNeil in last week’s AAAAA East sectional in Loganville.

The Bears’ sectional qualifiers are: senior Nick Salter (126 pounds), runner up; sophomore Brock Nielson (170 pounds), runner up; freshman Trey Wolfe (145 pounds), fourth place; freshman Chris Anderson (120 pounds), fourth place.

“We performed well,” said coach Don St. James. “Three champs and four placers, for a first year program? That is extraordinary. These kids have been focused all year and have worked hard to get this opportunity. Proud? Yes. But we can’t let up. We need to get ready for the state tournament.”
