JOHNS CREEK – The Chattahoochee Cougars turned in another strong offensive showing, piling up more than 425 yards of offense to defeat visiting Douglas County 37-26 last Friday night.
The Cougars (2-1) got 205 yards passing and three touchdowns from Taz Wilson, while running backs Chase Nelson and Kieron Ashley combined for 193 rushing yards.
Wilson connected with Colin Lisa for all three of his touchdown passes. The two teamed up for the Cougars’ first score, with Lisa catching TD tosses from Wilson of 40 and 20 yards to give Chattahoochee a 28-6 lead late in the second period.
Avery Ward had two catches for 56 yards on an 80-yard drive that ended with Lisa’s third TD catch of the half. Lisa finished with six catches for 105 yards.
The Tigers (2-1) got as close as 31-26 in the fourth period, but the Cougars’ defense held and Nelson, who carried 16 times for 123 yards, scored the clinching touchdown in the final minute. Ashley, who was injured in the team’s opener in the Georgia Dome, added 70 yards on 14 rushes. Blake Hundley scored the second Chattahoochee touchdown on a short run in the opening period.
The Cougars open play in Region 6-AAAAAA Friday night at home against North Forsyth, which is off to a 3-0 start behind a power-oriented offense and a defense that shut out the Raiders’ first two opponents. – MIKE BLUM
