AYUSA, a nonprofit high school student cultural exchange and leadership organization based in San Francisco, California, is launching its annual search for volunteers throughout the entire state.

As a past participant in the program, Senior Regional Director Mary Morton loves being a matchmaker for families and students.

“My family first hosted an exchange student 13 years ago; it was a life-changing experience,” she said.

AYUSA (which stands for “Academic Year in the USA”) works with diverse families from all 50 states. Host families provide three meals a day and a bedroom (either private or shared). Each exchange student is supported by a professionally trained local representative from AYUSA, who works closely with the family, student and local school throughout the program.

Exchange students are 15 to 18 years old from more than 60 countries, including Brazil, Japan and Germany. All students are fully insured, bring their own spending money and are proficient in English.

“Georgia is a popular destination for AYUSA exchange students visiting the U.S., perhaps because of our Southern hospitality in welcoming these young people, or because of the rich history and heritage of the South,” said Patricia Balli, AYUSA regional manager for Georgia.
