19th annual North Fulton Golden Games underway

Seniors get chance to compete for fun, pride

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Senior citizens gathered May 1 for the 19th annual North Fulton Golden Games at Johns Creek’s Newtown Park. This collaborative effort by the cities of Johns Creek, Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton and Sandy Springs hosts a month-long series of events.

Medals will be awarded to winners in sports such as tennis, bowling, golf and Bocce ball. There is even a medal for the Texas hold ‘em poker winner.

The event got under way with the presentation of the torch and kick-off competition featuring a hula-hoop contest among Mayors Mike Bodker (Johns Creek), Joe Lockwood (Milton), David Belle Isle (Alpharetta) and Jere Wood (Roswell).

Wood was the hands down (or is that hands up?) winner, keeping his hoop parallel to the ground without touching the ground the longest. He was immediately accused by his fellow mayors of having actually practiced for the contest.

Wood did not deny it.

The rest of the day, and indeed the month, belong to the seniors who can look forward to the competition, companionship and camaraderie.
