MILTON, Ga. — Running, jumping and sprinting toward the finish line, a local girl competed March 15-17 at the AAU third annual Indoor Track and Field National Championships in Birmingham, Ala.

Birmingham Falls Elementary student Ryan Jackson participated in the girls’ 11-year-old category where she won the gold medal in both the 400 meter and in the long jump, as well as the silver in the 200 meter.

Jackson ran the 400 meter in 1:07.75 minutes, and the 200 meter in 28.44 seconds. Her jump was 13 feet, 6 inches.

“I was nervous before, but after I was happy,” Jackson said. “It’s just fun to talk to your friends during practice but to also work hard.”

Jackson has been running for three years, and her favorite race is the 100 meter. She competes all throughout the spring and then moves on to summer track.

“We are looking forward to seeing better things in the summer,” said Sheila Jackson, Ryan’s mother. “We have all kinds of fun stuff. Summer track is just gearing up. She’s gone to the Junior Olympics the last two years, so we are hoping for a third go around. This was our first time competing in the indoor championship, so it was exciting.”

Ryan runs for the Titans Track Club and will continue to train for her upcoming season where she will have meets most weekends.
