CUMMING, Ga. — Peyton Ledford and Brenden Hull were selected to represent Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation (Sawnee EMC) on the 2013 Washington Youth Tour.

Ledford studies at Forsyth Central High and Hull is a student at South Forsyth High.

Ledford and Hull, who were selected based on their written application and a personal interview with the judges, will participate in a weeklong trip to Washington, D.C. While there, they will get the chance to see the U.S. Capitol, as well as other major monuments and museums in the area.

Before heading to Washington, they will meet in Atlanta with some of the brightest students from across Georgia who are representing other EMCs in the state. The following day, the group will travel to the nation’s capital to meet with 1,500 students from across the nation representing electric cooperatives like Sawnee.

As Sawnee EMC’s 2013 Washington Youth Tour delegates, these two local high school students will have the opportunity to observe the workings of the U.S. government and meet with their representatives in the U.S House and Senate. They will also be able to gain knowledge about the electric cooperative movement, which first brought much needed electrical service to farms and rural areas that previously did not have access to electricity.

Each year, Sawnee sponsors two high school students to attend this tour.

“It is an excellent opportunity for us to support the communities we serve and to help educate students who have an interest in politics, government and more importantly, the electric cooperatives of this state,” said Blake House, vice president of member services at Sawnee EMC.
