Roswell-based North Fulton Community Charities taking services ‘on the road’
Bank of America $200K grant finances mobile outreach program

ROSWELL, Ga. – North Fulton Community Charities is taking its services to the people – mainly the people of Johns Creek – with the help of a grant from Bank of America.

NFCC will use the grant – $200,000 in unrestricted funds – to buy a van that will be staffed to make “house calls” to areas of North Fulton that do not have public transportation service.

“There are a lot of families we can help, but they don’t have the means to get to us, especially in the Johns Creek area, which has no MARTA service at all,” said NFCC Director Barbara Duffy.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation has recognized North Fulton Community Charities and the job it does in the community as part of its Neighborhood Builder program.

The BOA Foundation awards high-performing nonprofits that have made a significant impact in the community working in the bank’s priority funding areas of housing, jobs and hunger relief. The Neighborhood Builder program is a strategic investment that pairs leadership training with a $200,000 unrestricted grant so leaders gain valuable skills while applying funding where it is most needed.

“Nonprofits provide much needed services in metro Atlanta, but too often lack the opportunity to invest in their own long-term growth and development,” said Geri Thomas, Georgia president, Bank of America. “We know that they are poised to make an even greater impact in our community.”

In its submission for the grant, NFCC said it will use its grant to launch a mobile outreach program to provide emergency assistance services to people living in Roswell, Mountain Park, Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Milton.

“North Fulton Charities submitted the grant with an explanation of what their challenges are. One of the big challenges it faces is the perception that there are no needs in North Fulton,” said Thomas. “Through the efforts of North Fulton Charities, we know that is not the case.

“Another challenge is the unavailability of public transportation to reach North Fulton Charities’ offices. Their focus is to serve those people in need, so they are going out into the community to meet those needs.”

NFCC is purchasing a van equipped with an office, waiting area and storage area for non-perishable food. The mobile outreach van will travel to accessible locations and provide its assistance services, which include food and financial assistance among others.

“The work that they are doing clearly meets the goals of the Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s goals, which are strengthening communities and building leadership within nonprofit agencies,” said Thomas.

Public transportation is quite limited in parts of North Fulton and many residents have difficulty getting to NFCC’s Roswell center.

“The van will extend our ability to offer critical programs and services that help struggling North Fulton families move toward self-sufficiency,” said Duffy. “And the van also will serve as a traveling ‘billboard’ to help raise awareness of the growing level of need in our community.”
