LOOK AHEAD: Alpharetta development on the move in 2013 says Director of Economic Deveolpment

January 08, 2013

Alpharetta is on the move. In the upcoming year we will see change, growth, building and tearing down, all growing pains for a new Alpharetta making 2013 a banner year for the city bringing new exciting elements to businesses and residents alike. So what will we see in 2013?

Economic Development. The City of Alpharetta got an early Christmas present for the Department of Community Affairs (DCA), with the approval of the City’s first Opportunity Zone designation on Windward Parkway. The Opportunity Zone is a business recruitment tool that offers a state tax incentive of $3,500 per new job created in the zone. Neighboring cities like Roswell already have opportunity zones and this designation helps Alpharetta stay competitive.

Key projects that will kick off in 2013 include the much anticipated AVALON development which plans to break ground in the second quarter of the year. This $600 million project will be a mix of residential, retail, office, hotel and entertainment space making it a lifestyle center residents and businesses can live work and play in. At the same time, construction on the Alpharetta City Center will be underway. Progress has already been made with the completion of the traffic roundabout on the new Haynes Bridge Road. A 450 space parking deck and new city hall are the next to follow in the $29 million dollar project.

Downtown Alpharetta is improving with the addition of new restaurants, retail stores and our new Banner program that will be launching in 2013. The City Center is just one of several downtown development initiatives that will be underway in the new year. Additional downtown events are planned to keep people coming down and enjoying downtown year round.

With the help of the first ever Alpharetta Technology Commission, the city will be taking a hard look at four elements for keeping Alpharetta ahead of the curve of for business recruitment, retention and expansion. GROW Alpharetta is designed to foster business growth and business incubation, BUILD Alpharetta will address the city infrastructure needs for the future, BRAND Alpharetta will market and tell the story of the city and our opportunities and KNOW Alpharetta will help us gain an understanding of what our current strengths and opportunities are.

2013 will be an exciting year. The leadership of the city is aggressively working on these and other initiatives that will position Alpharetta for success now and in the future.
