Brewpubs approved in Forsyth Co.
Tanner to serve locally produced beer on tap

CUMMING, Ga. – The brewpub concept got the thumbs up in Forsyth County.

Last week, Forsyth County Commissioners gave the final approval at their Dec. 6 regular meeting, setting the stage to allow for locally produced brews to be sold and distributed through wholesalers.

Brewpub means any eating establishment in which beer or malt beverages are manufactured or brewed.

The product will be produced locally by “Cherry Street Brewing Co-operative” at Rick Tanner’s Bar and Grill in the Vickery Village.

Nick Tanner, who will run the new venture, said he wanted to bring Forsyth County-made beer into Atlanta and other communities as well as attract visitors and beer enthusiasts to the area.

Tanner said he hopes to build a sense of community in Forsyth County with his microbrews of Irish Red Eye Jedi Ale, Dylan’s Dubbel, West LA Hopaway IPA, Ta Ta Cream Ale (for Breast Cancer Awareness), Friend of the Farmer’s Porter and other seasonals such as the Summer Fling Watermelon Blonde Ale and Coconut Porter.

“If we can promote Vickery Village regionally and nationally, people will travel to us for new and exciting beers and experiences,” Tanner has said.

Tanner said he picked up brewing beer in college at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo.

“Brewing beer quickly became more of an obsession than a hobby,” Tanner said.

Tanner has been working on bringing his passion to fruition for three years.

The county’s attorney said the county law had to be changed to mimic state law, which allows breweries in a pub to produce no more than 10,000 barrels of beer per year.

They can then sell the beer where it is produced and 5,000 barrels can be distributed wholesale.

One barrel is 31 gallons or the equivalent of two kegs.

Tanner wants to be able to sell his brew batches to a local distributor that would sell to local growler shops and restaurants.
