America Recycles Day is November 15

by City of Alpharetta Natural Resources Commission

November 12, 2012

Good news—the national recycling rate in America has increased every year since 1980. But since the national rate is 34%, there’s still room to improve! America Recycles Day is November 15. This day is dedicated to educating people about the importance of recycling, which helps our economy and preserves the health of our environment for future generations. You can take the America Recycles Day pledge at http://americarecyclesday.org/pledge/.

“Recyclable-content” products are products which are made from materials that would otherwise be thrown away. Did you know that there are more than 4500 recyclable-content products available for purchase; and, that this number continues to increase? Many of the products that we purchase and use every day have recyclable content, including aluminum cans, car bumpers, carpets, cereal boxes, comic books, motor oil, and glass containers. One-third of the PET#1 plastic bottles recycled in the United States are used by Georgia’s carpet manufacturers. In addition, the Georgia paper industry includes sixteen paper mills using recyclable-content material, nine of which rely exclusively upon recycled fabric.

Here in Alpharetta, residents have the opportunity to recycle many items curbside and to receive rewards for doing so through RecycleBank. Many of you who recycle in this manner may find that you are actually recycling more than you are throwing away! Have you checked the balance of points in your Recyclebank account lately? Go to https://www.recyclebank.com/rewards/type/gift-cards to check your balance and you may find that recycling is good for the economy, the environment, and your wallet!
