November 06, 2012

ATLANTA — Melody Richardson of Cumming is receiving the YMCA of Metro Atlanta’s 2012 Volunteer of the Year award for her service at the Forsyth County Family YMCA.

Her work will be honored at the annual volunteer recognition dinner Monday, Nov. 12.

“Melody has a special way of working with children,” said Kevin Thompson, executive director of the Forsyth County Family Y. “She is always thinking of new ideas for our after-school enrichment program, and the children benefit greatly from her efforts. She certainly deserves to be Volunteer of the Year.”

Richardson has been a Y volunteer for three years. She works with the after-school program, where she helps children with reading and homework.

“There is nothing more gratifying than giving your time to children,” said Richardson. “To see the children grow within a year is wonderful to behold. The Y provides a great opportunity to do that, and truly helps kids reach their full potential.”

Along with her work with the Y, Richardson organizes family science nights for local elementary schools. She also volunteers at the Sexton Hall enrichment center computer lab.
