ROSWELL, Ga. – The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association’s “Swing with the Legends” Golf Classic will tee off on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 9 a.m. to benefit the Drake House and help homeless women and children regain their stability.

The evening before the tournament, Monday, Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m., Chevrolet will sponsor a reception where the Phil Niekro Award will be handed out, former MLB players will speak and a charity auction will take place. Both events are at the Atlanta National Golf Club.

Single mothers with minor children from the North Fulton community who have found themselves in an unanticipated situation of homelessness are able to regain self-sufficiency and remain in their community through the 90-day program at the Drake House.

Kathy Swahn, Drake House’s executive director, said they have served 237 families and 442 children, with a success rate of over 72 percent since they opened in 2006. They now we have 27 children in residence and 14 moms who are all utilizing the resources at Drake House to lift themselves up and out into self-sufficiency.

The Drake House provides residents opportunities such as sessions with a career coach, life skills classes and weekly meetings with a family assessment manager.

“The challenge of funding these programs has become even greater with the weak economy. We are grateful for the support of the MLB Players Alumni Association this year,” said Karen Pye, development director of the Drake House.

Individual tickets for the cocktail reception are $30 and a reserved table including eight tickets is $250, which includes a MLB Legend seated at the table. An individual spot in the golf classic will be $225, which includes one gift bag. A foursome costs $900 and includes a MLB Legend in the foursome, four tickets to the charity cocktail party and four gift bags.
