Sawnee Elementary School student wins essay contest

CUMMING, Ga. — Sawnee Elementary School student Holley Murray recently won first place in the fifth-grade category of the Georgia Division United Daughters of the Confederacy essay writing contest.

Sponsored by Col. Hiram Parks Bell Chapter 2641 of Cumming, Murray's essay was written on the topic "Chickamauga, 1863," and gave an account of the Civil War battle that occurred 150 years ago in north Georgia.

Holley and her parents Thomas and Lucy Murray, along with her teacher Renee Chester, were honored at an awards luncheon at the Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Marietta where she was presented a certificate and cash award for her accomplishment.
