The first annual book sale fundraiser for the new Milton Library was held at Olde Blind Dog on Aug. 10.
MILTON, Ga. The Friends of the Milton Library held their first book sale at Olde Blind Dog Irish Pub in Milton on Saturday, Aug. 10.

The event raised more than $1,900 for the new Milton Library.

Friends President and City Councilmember Matt Kunz said more than 4,000 books were donated for the fundraiser.

"I was shocked at the amount of books donated for the sale," Kunz said. "I'd hoped we'd have a decent amount to sell, but had no idea people would donate like they have.

"Proceeds from this sale and the next one planned during the Crabapple Festival will go to help support the new Milton Library," he said.

Councilmembers Karen Thurman and Bill Lusk were also involved.

"We appreciate the support we've received from the community," Lusk said. "I am proud of our volunteers as they have worked together thus far like a group committed to being the best."

Kunz said there are currently over 50 volunteers, but they need more.

"We want to continue to develop leaders within our organization," he said. "And we need volunteers to continue to do what we've planned."

Kunz said the group would like to save the barn to have a Friends facility next to the library for book sales and events.

"This success would be unique because no other Friends organization in North Georgia will have their own structure on site," he said. "Once the library is built, we want to support the library by hosting community programs, promote local authors and continue fundraising through our book sale program.

"We want the Friends of the Milton Library to be strong 50 years from now, and that begins with our focus on people, trusting each other and being committed to our community," he said.

The organization is still accepting books for donation.

Books can be dropped off at Milton City Hall, 13000 Deerfield Parkway, Suite 107 (678-252-2400), Milton Fire Station No. 43, 750 Hickory Flat Road (770-777-6952), Shannondale Farm, 2395 Birmingham Road (770-569-9555) and Urban Farmhouse, 12680 Crabapple Road (770-410-1112).
