Milton's Cohen named state Taekwondo champ

MILTON, Ga. Seven-year-old Maya Cohen of American Taekwondo Association (ATA) Karate Atlanta, trained by Showtime Martial Arts' Nate Andrade, has been named 8U state champion in three categories creative forms, creative weapons and extreme martial arts (XMA) forms and placed third in traditional forms, second in traditional weapons and fifth in sparring.

She will compete for district champion (best in the seven Southeast states) in six categories June 8. In July, she will compete at the ATA World Expo. Recently, she was accepted into Maxwell VanEck's XMA team training the youngest and lowest belt child, one of three girls accepted out of a total of 18 kids. VanEck is an ATA world champion appointed by the grand master to run this special class.

Cohen has placed over 40 times in competition. Not only does she excel in Taekwondo, she is also an accelerated and TAG student at Birmingham Falls Elementary, maintaining an "A" average while working a grade level ahead.
