Autrey Mill students cook up something healthy in kitchen

Budding cooks get chance to do some hands-on baking.
JOHNS CREEK, Ga. The students of Autrey Mill Middle School's Cooks Club had a chance to work Dec. 3 with the chefs of Publix's Cooking School under the guidance of Chef Michael Maliska.

The students prepared a three-course meal while they learned good kitchen safety and cooking techniques.

Best of all, they were able to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

The Cooks Club meets once a month at AMMS under the guidance of Chef Carlin Breinig and her assistant, Chef Vicki Kuerer, who graciously donate their time to teach students healthy alternatives to their favorite, although sometimes not so healthy, meals, snacks and desserts.

The club sponsors are Nathalie Bernstein, Danielle Chereck, Jaimal Page and Maria Purwin. The program is part of First Lady Michelle Obama's initiative, "Chefs Move to School," a program designed to teach healthy eating habits to youngsters.

The hope is that if developed early, these healthy habits will evolve into healthy lifestyles.
