First, the students learned how to read maps, draw maps and use mapping tools like compasses and universally used technology like Google Maps with the help of Dawn Abercrombie and Critigen. They also learned about geocaching, a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache, the treasure, hidden at that location.
After the first-graders learned all they could about geography, they set out for Webb Bridge Park to put their knowledge to use. Using their smartphones, the students navigated the park in search of the geocache.
At the end of the day, the kids headed back to school with gold coins in their hands as the fruit of their quest to find hidden treasure.
