Apartments at Technology Park wrong for Johns Creek

The Mayor and City Council should listen to Ciba Vision and vote No on allowing 380 apartments at Technology Park.

It was Bodker's decision
June 13, 2008 | 08:57 PM

Bodker and the City Council could have changed the city ordinance. Don't hide behind the city sign ordinance as an excuse for the Mayor and majority of the City Council. They are out of touch with the interests of the citizens of Johns Creek.

You said "He (Bodker) won't let graduates be honored by their own community." Nothing could be further from the real truth. Our HOA honored our graduates as did many others. Go ahead and put up a banner like you probably did last year, but this year, be legal and get a sign permit. It is only $25.00. If your HOA can't afford the $25 then have a bake sale or have the parents pay. It was not Bodker's personal decision at all, it is the City Sign Ordinance. Bodker by himself can't do anything, it takes the entire city council, and it takes citizen involvement. If they had allowed banners without a permit, then Cornetta could have improved his legal position because all his banners well illegal. You have to apply the law fairly and evenly to everyone.

Priceless argument.
June 13, 2008 | 03:16 PM

This shopping center already has a Chick Filet and a Country Buffet, so I don't buy the odor argument. I do agree that our planet does NOT NEED another fast food establishment of any brand, let alone Sonic. In any case, so far the planning commission conditioned it with odor scrubbers so you should be fine, but attend the City Council Meeting Monday and express your view, and make sure they keep the recommended condition for the odor scrubbers. In all the public meetings the community was silent on this issue, however the JCCA took a stand against it. On another subject, you might want to look into the legality of the 2 extra out parcels in this center, the ATM, and the coffee hut. Nobody can find where they were permitted.

Month Old Baby; VZW Amphitheater (Disappointing Sound)
July 05, 2008 | 12:25 PM

Can any readers share some insight regarding the sound quality/quantity at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta, GA?

I attended the Steely Dan show on 6/11/2008 and consequently have a few curiosities. While there were no flies on this band (they were tighter than ever), the audio impressed me as lacking in quality and quantity.

Regarding the "month old baby" (the venue):

1) From the lawn area, the decibel (SPL) level was very low (quiet) although clearer than the covered seats area and very shy on bass response.

2) From the last row of covered seats, the sound was louder, but still quiet for a rock concert. Surprisingly, sound clarity suffered at this closer listening position.

This experience led me to wonder if there was an overall loudness restriction imposed by venue administration (or other local authority)? Was the sound reinforcement system supplied by the venue as a "house" system or was it provided by the band's touring sound company?

Even though the show was quite enjoyable (I've never seen a "bad" Steely Dan concert), it was a shame that the product didn't come across with the full impact it deserved.

Thanks for any help.

Actually, Becker was referring to the AMPHITHEATER as a month old baby. Not the band!! The touring band's been relatively consistent for several years now. And Becker didn't sing lead on Godwhacker, but rather Gaucho, a song which they have NEVER performed live before. And it was amazing for your information. Hardcore fans were stoked.

You should check out Walter's latest solo effort, Circus Money. They did play Godwhacker, but Fagen sang lead. These guys are gods!

By rolling back the milleage rate and issuing more homestead exemptions there will be no wiggle room if times change, which they do, as time goes on. The budget as is, maintains the current infrastructure, with some room for annual employee salary increases and a couple of new projects,(ex. New field in Webb Bridge). However, unfortunately, more money is needed to complete more road projects and dare I say, begin investing in creating a viable downtown.

Alpharetta Reported a Tax Increase
June 13, 2008 | 08:12 PM

Look at the official notice in the Revue June 12th issue. Alpharetta is raising property taxes by 7.06% "To Maintain Quality" as the City describes it.

They rolled the millage rate back a little, but not nearly enough to match the increase in assessments. Perfectly reasonable, really. So, don't worry, as long as the money is well spent the infrastructure will not deteriorate Atlanta-style.

I daresay I hope Roswell, where I live, does something similar. Unlike Fulton County taxes, I don't mind paying more city taxes because it all stays local.

If Fulton County taxes go up, we get nothing but emptied pockets. If city taxes go up, we get better parks, we get better concerts, we take care of our first responders (and get the best), we fix the potholes, and we get better property values.

June 09, 2008 | 06:51 AM

Yes the council does it again they "reduce" your taxes. Sure looks great, remember me when its time to vote again. Lets face it no one is calling them asking for a reduction, they are calling asking for more cops/fireman/parks and rec/street/traffic improvements. Thats ok Atlanta did the same thing for years. They rolled the rate back and look what took place. Services went to near nothing and then they raised the tax rates from 40-60 percent to make up for the years of "rollback". Of course by then it was to late and services were in the crapper and and well you know the rest. Enjoy that 50 dollar tax break people. When you need a fire truck or cop or try and get your kid into a program in a few years. Sorry we had to cut back because we just dont have the money. But look at the pretty statue of kids holding hands around a try....100k for that.

Worst President?
June 14, 2008 | 08:45 AM

Our War Veteran must have been overseas when Jimmy Carter created the highest interest and inflation rates in this generation, a hostage crisis involving a miserably botched rescue attempt, an oil crisis, and the dismantling of our intelligence capability, thus creating the catalyst for the liberal failures we are suffering through now! Zero terrorist attacts on our country after 9/11 and trying to overcome the highest tax increase in history is certainly not the track record of a bad president, it is too bad the guy trying to clean up after the delinquents has to take the fall. No, Mr. Carter can only lay claim to being the worst active and former President this country has ever known only beating out the guy most interested in interns and opinion polls by a nose.

I have been in France for a week now. When healthcare subject comes up, all you here is horror stories. First person stories: My friend's son gets his tonsils out and the only food they will give him is hot soup even though it says cold only on his paperwork. My friend is giving birth and she cannot get an epidural and the only explanation is 'there is nobody here for that'. My father in law has to pay for his ambulance ride himself because, i kid you not, 'he was in a sitting position in the ambulance' according to the report.

One thing that is great here - it was the only good idea Hillary Clinton had: it is illegal to forego an insurance here in France. you are forced to buy health insurance, even if you would prefer new rims for your car or more beer. Basically, your wages are garnished. A law like that would make a big difference in USA because if you are truly poor you get medicaid. If you are in between, milions of us opt to 'risk it' and spend money on lifestyle rather than health insurance. Not all, but many.

Creating a health care system where you tell doctors that their skills and services are so worthless that few should have to pay for them will cause every single college student that would have made a great doctor to choose another career.

Get ready for Canadian-style healthcare in America. Get ready to wait 5 days in an emergency room on a gurney with a sheet over you because there is nobody to see you. Get ready to be sent away for the 10th month in a row from a confirmed heart bypass operation. Get ready to be charged with a crime as it is in Canada for trying to pay for your own operation because you can't wait 10 months.

June 14, 2008 | 01:15 PM

The person who wrote about not receiving the $500,000 exemption on the sale of her home is truly the one not in touch. There are those without health insurance, working hard everyday in retail, construction, food service, who make a straight living wage. They support their families, pay rent, and only go to the doctor if it is an extreme emergency. They struggle to put gas in their cars and if they live in the Johns Creek/Alpharetta area, they can't rely on public transportation. The difference between the Dems and the Repubs is something called compassion for your fellow man. Where you feel like in this great country, no person should have to struggle the so many are struggling now. No, there are many who cannot name a specific accomplishment that any candidate made in their political career. Even with all of the info that is available on the internet and on t.v., people still go with their gut and by listening to what the candidates say during debates, speeches and town hall meetings. Eighteen million people can't all be wrong. The people want a drastic change from the status quo and the only way to do it is to take a leap of faith and vote Obama!
