Use precaution to prevent mail-ID theft
April 18, 2013 | 07:11 PM

Mail theft is one of the most common ways thieves obtain sensitive information for identity theft. Theft of outgoing mail is reported in the news more frequently because people tend to notice when their bills aren't paid or checks aren't forged. However, theft of incoming mail is highly under-reported because people don't know what comes in the mail from day to day. Thieves target bank statements, preapproved credit card offers, courtesy checks, medical bills and more to steal identity. To protect yourself, (1) use a high security locking mailbox like the MAIL BOSS to prevent theft of incoming mail, (2) never send sensitive mail (checks or bill payments) from an unsecured mailbox - instead, bring them directly to the post office or use online bill pay - it's more secure, and (3) always shred sensitive documents, most of which come in the unlocked mailbox, before discarding them to thwart dumpster divers. But remember, you can't shred what you don't get and the mailbox is the point of origin!
