depression
September 06, 2012 | 07:17 AM

In a study published earlier this year, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)reduced depression scores 50% in patients with treatment-resistant depression. Cognitive function improved with the initial 20-minute treatment and depression lessened within a week. tDCS uses tiny amounts of electricity from a stimulator powered by a 9 volt battery via sponge electrodes. tDCS also demonstrated reduction of neuroinflammtion. tDCS is easy to do, has no side effects, can be done by the patient at home and the lifetime cost is less than the cost of an antidepressant for a year. 40% of depressed patients do not respond to antidepressants whose side effects include weight gain and decreased libido. Infection is the most common side effect of infleximab. tDCS also provides relief for chronic pain, including migraine, fibromyalgia and complex regional pain.
