Relay for Life takes run at cancer in '09 in Roswell
January 07, 2009
Here are the grim numbers: One in two males will face a cancer diagnosis at some point in his lifetime. Two in three females will do the same. Given such scary statistics, it is imperative that concerned citizens do all they can to fight this dreadful disease.

Roswell is again taking up the fight, as plans for The American Cancer Society 2009 Relay For Life of Roswell are well under way. The event will be May 8-9 at Centennial High School, with a theme of "Lights, Camera, Action for a Cure." Event chairs Ron Redner and Danialle Evans join others on a Steering Committee charged with ensuring a successful fund-raising event.

Having raised approximately $120,000 in 2008, the Roswell Relay for Life team has set an aggressive but attainable goal of $175,000, an increase of over 45 percent. Studies have shown that even in uncertain economic times, citizens are still willing to give to causes such as the American Cancer Society.

Recognizing that almost everyone has been touched by cancer in some manner, whether personally or through a family member or other loved one, the Roswell Relay for Life Steering Committee maintains that the Roswell community's generosity and commitment to helping those affected by cancer will propel the Relay to this goal.

North Fulton Regional Hospital (NFRH) is again showing its commitment to the community by serving as the Presenting Sponsor of the Roswell Relay for Life. Additional 2009 sponsors include: the Rotary Club of Roswell, Bank of North Georgia, American Trust Bank, Spencer Pest Control, Andretti Indoor Karting and Games, Outback Steakhouse and Brookwood Grill. Centennial High School is serving as the location sponsor.

Honorary Chairpersons for the 2009 Roswell Relay for Life are: Ga. Secretary of State Karen Handel, Area Schools Superintendent Robert Lynch, NFRH CEO Joe Austin, Bank of North Ga. CEO Don Howard, American Trust Bank Vice President Connie Pence and the Rev. Frank Lewis, senior pastor at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

To participate in The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Roswell people can form a team, sign up survivors, become a sponsor or simply come out to the event May 8-9 to support the group's efforts.
