ALPHARETTA – Academic performance, civic involvement and leadership abilities earned a dozen students from four high schools a place on Alpharetta's 2009 Youth Council.

As part of the program curriculum, Youth Council members are required to complete a group project of community significance that is also of special interest to area youth. This year's Youth Council has selected the development of a paths and trails plan for Alpharetta. The plan will identify a system of bike paths, sidewalks and green trails that link community parks, neighborhoods and schools with the intent to encourage healthy lifestyles and non-automobile transportation. They will work with key city staff to complete the project by the end of April.

The Youth Council members, all juniors and seniors, had to be recommended by at least three faculty members of their respective schools.

This year's Alpharetta Youth Council members are:

Alpharetta High – Christine Harris, Chelsea Hasset, Caroline Solner;

Chattahoochee High – Marissa Fine;

Milton High – Thomas Buscemie, Kyle Ferguson, Alexandria Finkhousen, Meghan Gordon, Alexandra Hall, JR Harrison, Adria Ribbler;

Mount Pisgah Christian – Matthew Cubin.

Founded in 2000, the stated purpose of the Alpharetta Youth Council is threefold:

• To establish a forum for discussion of topics affecting the student population;

• To create an interactive learning environment that bridges the gap between classroom lessons and real world applications; and

• To provide an opportunity for students to earn points/credits toward graduation.

Youth Council participants develop and hone leadership skills that will benefit them throughout their adult lives.
