Forsyth County plants 83 trees from Tree Replacement Fund
|
December 30, 2008 Forsyth County created a Tree Replacement Fund so that developers who stripped construction sites of trees would have to replace them somehow. But no trees have ever been planted in the county.
Until now.
The county arborist and Public Works Department put in 83 trees at the 110-acre Central Park's parking lot so that in a few years, people will be able to park in the shade instead of the hot sun. And they will get a little more greenery too.
And not only that, county arborist Greg Wallace says these hardwoods will add some vibrant colors in the fall. The new trees are a mixture of willow oak, maple and zelkova. Wallace selected them because they are hardy trees that do well in urban areas.
"These trees will do well in a parking lot," Wallace said. "They will also provide some rich fall colors when their leaves turn.
The trees are helping to complete the county's master plan for Central Park, said Parks Director Jerry Kinsey.
"Trees were supposed to have been planted in the islands in park's parking lot, but some budget cuts killed that. Now with the Tree Fund, we are getting some trees in at no cost to the county," Kinsey said.
