| | | Hafwen Gui, a Creek View Elementary School student, was happy to be named student of the quarter at her school, Creek View Elementary. | | December 16, 2008 ALPHARETTA – Windward Rotary Club has chosen to help charities and programs that make it the "education club" in its members' eyes. Whether it is students from local schools honored or grants obtained for after school programs, the Rotarians pick most of their projects with children and education in mind.
Gaining this distinction is shown with active pursuit of school principals to join the club. Three principals – Tracy Trussell at Creek View Elementary, Elizabeth Fogartie at Webb Bridge Middle and Mary Anne Charron of Alpharetta High – are members of the club. They help coordinate their schools' selections for Student and Teacher of the Quarter, honored by the club with certificates and U.S. Savings Bonds for the students.
The latest students of the quarter were: Hafwen Gui, Creek View Elementary; Josh Dobbs, Webb Bridge Middle; Marissa Pan, Alpharetta High.
Rather than buying gifts for its speakers, the club instead donates a book in speakers' names to the schools.
The club has also obtained grants from its parent Rotary District to buy books for Alpharetta High's media center. The newest of the three schools, it is still building its collection year by year.
In addition, the club expanded its dictionary donation to a second school this year, with students from Manning Oaks and Creek View Elementary schools receiving their own dictionaries. More than 130 Manning Oaks third graders gathered in the school's cafeteria one recent morning as Assistant Principal Christopher M. Askew introduced club members.
New this year is another Rotary District grant to fund an after school Extended Learning program at Webb Bridge Middle School, which provides additional time for students who can not achieve their academic goals in reading and mathematics during the regular school day. The targeted students are those who scored level one on the CRCT in reading and/or math.
The club also sponsors regular AIDS awareness programs at local middle schools through donations from its members.
Most other activities by the club serve children in some way. The club regularly helps build Habitat for Humanity homes, donating money to that cause. It also supports North Fulton Community Charities.
Most recently several club members helped the non-profit organization with its Christmas Family Gift distribution.
The club's annual Christmas party was used to collect gifts for a family by NFCC.
Windward Rotary Club meets Mondays at noon at the Atlanta Marriott-Alpharetta on Windward Parkway near Ga. 400 and North Point Parkway. The club's next regular meeting will be Jan. 5, 2009. Visit www.windwardrotary.com for more information about the club and its activities.
