December 16, 2008 ROSWELL – LG Electronics opened its commercial air conditioning training academy in a 16,000-square-foot facility off Old Roswell Road, right in the middle of part of the country dependent on air conditioning for its growth.
Thirty jobs came with the opening, and the company plans to hire more staff in 2009.
"The new academy marks an important milestone for our company and the industry as we deliver the best hands-on training for products here in the region of the country with high demand for commercial air conditioning systems," said John Taylor, vice president of public affairs and communications for LG Electronics.
The company anticipates at least 600 engineers, contractors and technicians will travel annually to North Fulton for training.
The opening of the academy also brings together the company's mobile phone and digital appliance metro offices under one roof for the first time, he said.
Michael Ahn, president and CEO of LG Electronics North America, said five years ago, the company had sales of more than $5 billion. This year, revenues will grow to $13 billion.
"During that same period, the LG brand went from being virtually unknown to 83 percent brand awareness today," he said.
Ahn said LG Electronics' air-conditioning product lines include PTAC for hotels and Duct Free Split, as well as the recently launched Multi-V.
Dr. H.Y. Nho, president of LG's worldwide air conditioner division, said the company has been a global leader in air conditioner production for the past five years, manufacturing compressors and motors for manufacturers throughout the world. It also has 10 of its own plants around the world, distribution in 134 countries and holds the No. 1 market share in 47 countries.
The launch of the academy shows its support for customers service and training, he said.
"We started our business in 2004 basically with no customers and no business," said Steve Schmitt, director of Commercial Air Conditioning, LG Electronics USA. "But what we did have was a plan."
The academy is a milestone in that plan, he said. LG Electronics staff will spend 4,000 hours training contractors, manufacturing representatives and salespeople on the company's air conditioning products. The training is nothing new, he said, but the academy is the company's first in the country. Technicians and trainers will still travel the country to offer training.
