December 09, 2008 FULTON COUNTY - No one wants to miss out on potential Federal stimulus money – including the Fulton County Commission.
While Wall Street and the big three U.S. car companies are on the forefront of taxpayer minds when they think of where recent bailout funds might go, cities such as Atlanta and Phoenix are looking to receive help as well. And now, Fulton County is looking forward to any funding it might receive from a supplemental stimulus proposed for consideration by the next U.S. Congress.
Commissioner Lynn Riley made the resolution at the Nov. 19 meeting and received overwhelming support from her fellow commissioners. Chairman John Eaves was absent and Commissioner Tom Lowe did not vote.
"We have missed many an opportunity in the past and my motion came as a result of this," said Riley.
The county will urge its Washington, D.C.-based lobbyist, Patton Boggs, to pursue all funding opportunities that might come available to the county. The areas in which they are specifically interested include highways, transportation and the Community Development Block Grant program.
"I hope that Fulton County citizens might receive the benefit of federal funding for transit improvements in MARTA or road projects in North Fulton cities," Riley said. "Other opportunities for Community Development Block Grants should be aggressively pursued."
At the request of Commissioner Emma Darnell, Fulton County Manager Zachary Williams will ask Boggs to provide the county with a list of potential funding opportunities they anticipate to be available after the next federal legislative session.
The lobbyist will also be looking for areas that Fulton may be able to join forces with the National Association of Counties to request funding.
